Overview:

Flying Fish partnered with the Cincinnati Museum Center to design and develop the Neil Armstrong Space Exploration Gallery, a permanent exhibit honoring the life and achievements of the first person to walk on the Moon. Opened in 2019, this gallery celebrates Armstrong and highlights Ohio’s significant role in space exploration. Through a mix of historical artifacts, cutting-edge multimedia, and immersive environments, visitors are taken on a journey through space, reliving the challenges and triumphs of NASA’s Apollo missions.

Scope:

Flying Fish delivered comprehensive design and fabrication services to bring the Neil Armstrong Space Exploration Gallery to life, handling every aspect from design to fabrication and installation.

Design, Production & Fabrication

We designed and produced critical gallery features, such as interactive stations, display cases for historical artifacts, and curved walls that create a futuristic and immersive environment. The fabrication ensured the durability and quality necessary for a permanent installation.

Flying Fish installed advanced audiovisual systems, including a 360-degree projection theater, which serves as the gallery’s centerpiece. This theater uses six projectors and surround sound to create an all-encompassing experience of the Apollo 11 mission. Original NASA footage is projected onto three curved screens and floor projections, placing visitors at the heart of the space journey.

We developed interactive elements such as a flight director simulation and other stations that allow visitors to engage directly with the history and excitement of space travel. These hands-on exhibits encourage active learning and deepen the visitor experience.

Flying Fish managed the entire project, from initial concept development through final installation. Our team oversaw every phase, ensuring the gallery was delivered on time, within budget, and aligned with the Cincinnati Museum Center’s creative and operational goals.

Flying Fish’s design of the gallery’s 360-degree immersive theater is a technical achievement, offering visitors a multisensory journey through space. Working with AV integrator Electrosonic, we integrated six high-end projectors to create a seamless projection environment surrounding visitors. Paired with a custom sound system, the theater offers synchronized motion graphics and surround sound that transports visitors from Earth to the Moon. The theater’s curved walls and projection globe further enhance the immersive experience, adding depth and realism to the storytelling.

In addition to the theater, interactive displays throughout the gallery engage visitors in space exploration through simulations and hands-on activities. These multimedia features are designed to appeal to both casual visitors and space enthusiasts alike, providing a blend of education and entertainment.
