James Cameron – Challenging the Deep opens at OMSI

Oregon Museum of Science and Industry offers a quick take on the ‘Avatar’ director’s deep dive into marine exploration.

Portland – (Portland Tribune) James Cameron is a lot more than the Oscar-winning movie director famous for “Avatar,” “Aliens,” “The Terminator” and “The Titanic.”

As a 14-year-old kid he was inspired to write to the engineer of a submersible he’d seen on show in Canada. He made his own from a paint can, using a mouse as the test passenger.

Years later Cameron’s family moved to Los Angeles where he developed his movie career. He always worked with his head, not in the clouds, but in the mysterious depths of the oceans. His movie making may peak with the upcoming three-hour sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water” but Cameron’s exploration career triumphed when he manned the Deepsea Challenger submersible craft to the deepest ocean floor, 35,803 feet down, in the Mariana Trench near the Philippines.

A new exhibit at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry called “James Cameron — Challenging the Deep” tells this lesser-known story of Cameron’s creative and technical achievements in deep-ocean science, engineering and exploration, including his record-breaking dive. It shows through Sept. 25.
