Overview:

Flying Fish partnered with the Montréal Science Centre to create HOCKEY: Faster Than Ever, a high-energy touring exhibition that explores the science, speed, and spirit behind one of the world’s most beloved sports. Through immersive environments, hands-on interactives, and STEAM-powered experiences, the exhibition breaks down what makes hockey fast, fierce, and fundamentally fascinating.

Visitors step into the action to explore biomechanics, physics, materials science, and the cultural stories that have shaped the sport’s evolution. Developed with insights from the NHL and NHLPA, and a panel of sports science experts, the exhibition fuses science with sport in a dynamic, play-driven format that engages enthusiasts, families, and science lovers alike.

Scope:
Development & Design

The development process began with a close collaboration between Flying Fish and the Montréal Science Centre’s team of science experts. Together, they created an exhibition that seamlessly weaves hockey’s history and cultural influence with the scientific principles that enable the sport. The design emphasizes interactive environments and a narrative that is both inclusive and experiential, ensuring that visitors of all ages and abilities feel welcomed and engaged.

Interactive zones highlight the physics of motion, balance, force, and velocity, while other areas explore the engineering breakthroughs that have shaped skates, sticks, padding, and protective equipment. An ice resurfacer offers the perfect selfie spot, while added content, tailored to each venue from the NHL and the NHLPA let's every venue celebrate regional pride and team traditions.

STEAM concepts are embedded throughout the exhibition, transforming hands-on challenges into learning experiences that illuminate the science behind reaction times, shot power, and movement mechanics. The result is a rich, multifaceted exhibition that celebrates both the sport’s heritage and its deep connections to science and innovation.

Production & Fabrication

Flying Fish fabricated every element of HOCKEY: Faster Than Ever using high-quality materials and robust engineering designed to withstand energetic visitor engagement. The exhibition features a wide range of immersive components, including motion-based interactives, reaction-time challenges, historical artifact displays, and multimedia stations that bring the game's excitement and complexity to life.

Visitors encounter a range of meticulously built elements that highlight the sport’s technical evolution, including men’s and women’s gear from various eras that demonstrate how materials science has revolutionized player safety and performance.

Interactive stations encourage visitors to test their reflexes, compare advancements in equipment, and examine how engineering and physics influence play on the ice. High-definition video displays, highlight reels, and animated visualizations further enhance the visitor experience, creating an environment that feels immediate, energetic, and authentically connected to hockey culture.

Every component is supported by detailed tour documentation, custom-engineered crates, and integrated A/V systems that ensure consistency, durability, and flawless installation at each host venue.

Consultation & Licensing

Flying Fish worked closely with the Montréal Science Centre to develop a tour model that maximizes the exhibition’s reach and long-term financial success. This included licensing agreements, sponsorship opportunities, market analysis, and strategic planning designed to support a multi-year North American tour. Flying Fish provided comprehensive sales and marketing support, aligning the exhibition’s educational value with the needs of science centers, museums, and cultural institutions.

Each host venue receives a complete Marketing Kit that includes brand assets, graphic templates, photography, programming ideas, merchandise recommendations, and social media guidance. These materials help institutions attract audiences, generate excitement, and build strong promotional campaigns tailored to their local communities. Intellectual property oversight ensures that branding remains consistent and that partner content from the NHL and NHLPA is used accurately and responsibly.

Tour Management & Operations

Flying Fish manages every aspect of the touring process for HOCKEY: Faster Than Ever. This includes venue coordination, freight and logistics, oversight of installation and deinstallation, and on-site staff training.

Exhibition Managers travel to each venue to guide installation, ensuring that every component—from multimedia systems to interactive mechanics—performs reliably and safely.

Host kits and operational guides streamline onboarding for museum teams, while remote monitoring capabilities enable Flying Fish to quickly and effectively troubleshoot interactives and A/V elements. With a focus on consistency and quality, Flying Fish ensures that HOCKEY: Faster Than Ever delivers a seamless, energizing experience at every location.

Impact:
Audience Engagement and STEAM Education

Since its premiere in 2021, HOCKEY: Faster Than Ever has exceeded attendance goals throughout its tour. Visitors respond enthusiastically to the exhibition’s interactive design and the opportunity to explore STEAM concepts through the lens of an exhilarating sport. The exhibition has proven particularly effective at engaging families, school groups, and young learners, making science approachable and exciting while encouraging curiosity about engineering, physics, biomechanics, and sports technology.

Institutional Success and Wide-Ranging Appeal

The exhibition’s dynamic mix of storytelling, physical engagement, and scientific exploration has driven strong attendance, media coverage, and social media engagement at each host venue. High-energy challenges, from skating to shooting a hockey puck as fast as you can, inspire frequent photo ops and organic online buzz.

Collaboration with the NHL, NHLPA, and CCM enhances the exhibition’s credibility and broadens its appeal, making it a standout offering for institutions seeking innovative STEAM programming.

Sustainable Revenue and Longevity

Under Flying Fish’s management, HOCKEY: Faster Than Ever continues to generate reliable revenue for the Montréal Science Centre through touring partnerships, licensing, and merchandise opportunities. Its strong performance demonstrates the lasting appeal of STEAM-focused, experience-driven exhibitions and reinforces the value of partnerships that unite cultural storytelling with scientific exploration. The exhibition’s continued popularity supports institutional goals while reaching diverse audiences.

A High-Energy, Science-Driven Touring Success

HOCKEY: Faster Than Ever showcases Flying Fish’s ability to merge sports, science, and culture into an immersive, hands-on learning experience that resonates with audiences worldwide. Through thoughtful design, robust fabrication, and world-class tour management, Flying Fish and the Montréal Science Centre created an exhibition that is as exciting as the sport it celebrates. Powered by STEAM exploration and interactive play, the exhibition invites visitors to understand hockey in a new light—revealing the incredible science that makes the game faster than ever.
