Overview:

Initially developed by Barrett Barrera Projects and MUSEEA, the exhibition explores themes of femininity, beauty, and power through avant-garde fashion. It showcases the iconic designs of Alexander McQueen, Gucci, Iris van Herpen, and more. Flying Fish designed, produced, and fabricated every element, transforming the original concept into a stunning and powerful touring experience.

Scope:

Flying Fish expanded and adapted the original concept. Our contributions included:

Development & Design

To prepare the exhibition for its premiere at the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA), we expanded and refined the foundational narrative concept. We developed a complete design package—from schematic to full-detail drawings—to illuminate the exhibition’s eight archetypal personalities.

Visitors explored these themes through more than 100 avant-garde fashion pieces, dramatic lighting, multimedia moments, and thoughtfully orchestrated sightlines. Every design decision served a single goal: creating a powerful, poetic, and highly memorable visitor journey that could travel from museum to museum with ease.

Production & Fabrication

In our fabrication facility, we brought the design to life with precision and skill. Including custom scenic elements, platforms, and mounts built to support delicate couture garments. Museum-grade crates engineered for safe and efficient travel. We also managed the planning, procurement, and installation of the A/V systems designed to heighten the mood and enrich the story.

Every component was built for durability, elegance, and adaptability.

Consultation & Licensing

Flying Fish guided A Queen Within’s entry into the touring exhibition marketplace. Our team led host venue outreach, contract negotiations, brand stewardship, and financial modeling. We also developed merchandising strategies that complemented the exhibition’s exploration of identity and the symbolism of womanhood. This comprehensive support positioned the exhibition as a compelling offering for museums and cultural institutions.

Tour Management & Operations

Once the exhibition was prepared for international tour, we coordinated logistics, freight, and on-site exhibition management. From coordinating the exhibition’s installation and deinstallation to producing the host kit and custom floor plans, the exhibition was set up for touring success. Our exhibition management team also provided on-site staff training and technical support, ensuring consistency and quality throughout its display.

Impact:

A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes premiered at the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) to widespread critical acclaim, earning national press coverage and significantly boosting museum attendance. Compelling exploration of femininity, beauty, and power resonated with audiences and established the exhibition as a must-see cultural event. The success of its premiere sparked additional bookings at host venues, significantly expanding the exhibition's reach.

By blending avant-garde fashion with dynamic storytelling, A Queen Within became a unique artistic experience that shaped conversations about contemporary fashion and female identity. For our team, it demonstrated what visionary design, meticulous fabrication, and strategic tour management could achieve.

The increased visibility and impact of the exhibition also highlight Flying Fish’s expertise in design, fabrication, and tour management, demonstrating how visionary presentation can amplify an exhibition’s message and cultural influence.
